9th AfriGEO Symposium 2025 Agenda
Venue: King Fahd Palace Hotel, Dakar, Senegal
Date: 6th to 9th October 2025
Theme: From Data to Impact
Background
AfriGEO is an initiative of the African Community in GEO aimed at providing a coordination framework and platform for Africa’s participation in GEO. It aims to be a Pan African initiative to raise awareness and develop capacity in EO for governments, research organizations, academia, and the commercial sector; to provide a framework for strengthening partnerships and collaborations within Africa; to be a gateway into Africa for international partners, and to be a support mechanism for the implementation of GEO objectives and programmes in Africa in line with the GEO Post 2025 Strategy.
The theme underscores the critical role of Earth Observation (EO) data and geospatial technologies in shaping Africa’s future. It also highlights the importance of transforming raw data into actionable insights that drive policy, economic growth, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. As Africa continues to harness geospatial technologies for sustainable development, Africa GEO players have to ensure that Earth Intelligence is accessible to governments, policymakers, businesses, researchers, and communities.
Key Aspects of the Theme include:
- The Power of Data: Advancing Africa’s Geospatial Ecosystem
- Translating Data into Impactful Decisions
- Strengthening Geospatial Infrastructure and Collaboration
- Driving Innovation for Sustainable Development
- Capacity Building and Inclusivity
The 9th AfriGEO Symposium 2025, therefore, aims at providing a platform to foster this engagement and conversations by bringing together experts from the aforementioned spheres to discuss, unlock and activate integration, co-design, user engagement, partnership and capacity development in Africa. The symposium calls Africa to:
- Strengthen Open Data Access
- Transform Data into Actionable Insights
- Foster Collaboration and Partnerships
- Embrace Innovation: Leverage AI, cloud computing, and big data analytics to enhance decision-making and bridge Africa’s digital divide
- Empower the Next Generation

Convener: LUISA-EO AFRICA, CSE
Venue: King Fahd Amphitheatre

Session Description: The session will focus on the development of a remote sensing-driven Human Appropriation of Net Primary Productivity (HANPP) monitoring framework for general land cover types in case study agroecosystems (Land cover types, Cropland, Forest, Rangeland and Urban). Net primary production (NPP) is the net amount of biomass produced by plants each year and a key ecosystem process providing the basic sustenance for all heterotrophs. Humans interfere with this process by transforming ecosystems in terms of land cover change, e.g. converting forests to croplands, and by extracting biomass to provide societies with food, animal feed, fiber or bioenergy. The framework of HANPP quantifies these alterations of NPP flows and hence the availability of trophic energy in ecosystems across land-use types and attributes them to various land-use processes and primary biomass products. This allows us to assess and compare land-use intensities and resulting pressures on ecosystems across space and time.
